Reduced Red Blood Cell Surface Level of Factor H as a Mechanism Underlying Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria

Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western University report that experimental data derived from murine samples and samples from patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) provides solid evidence that surface-bound Factor H on red blood cells plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of PNH. In conclusion, they said their findings suggest that “augmenting FH levels on the RBCs would be another therapeutic approach for the management of PNH.”
