Elevated von Willebrand Factor Levels During Heavy Menstrual Bleeding Episodes Limit the Diagnostic Utility for von Willebrand Disease

The authors, from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University, say theirs “is the first study to examine the results of VWD diagnostic laboratory tests in the acute HMB population,” and conclude that testing for VWD during times of acute heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) “may lead to false elevation in VWF levels which can mask a diagnosis of VWD and can provide false reassurance.”
