Hereditary/Acquired Bleeding Disorders

The von Willebrand Disease Aging and Bleeding Correlation (VWD ABC) Study

At the 63rd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), a multicenter team of investigators from 7 hemophilia treatment centers across the US described their ongoing cross-sectional study funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. that will investigate the effect of age on VWF levels and bleeding risk in patients with type 1 von Willebrand disease (VWD), and evaluate whether this effect is altered by pathogenic VWF mutations and/or multimorbidity. To date, 43 participants have been enrolled. As the investigators note, the study findings "will be used to justify a longitudinal study, which is the ideal approach to research the effects of aging in this population."
